Classics for Summer: Part 1

There are so many good books to choose from at any given time it can be hard to narrow down the list. Particularly for bibliophiles like myself the number of books I want to read could fill multiple notebooks on its own so I like to try and separate out some choices to relegate them to a season of the year when they feel most appropriate. With Summer's beginnings upon us, I thought I would share today my summer recommendations from classic literature love stories. Later this summer I'll continue with another editorial on classic summer adventures!

Summer Romances

1. Lolita

This is one of the great pieces of literature out there that immediately spawns debate and discussion. As my husband puts it, "It's a beautiful and incredibly touching love story if I could forget for more than three seconds that she's 12..." Check it out this summer if you haven't yet!

2. Emma

Everyone has that friend or family member who looooves to meddle in the love lives of others. Sometimes they get it right but so much more often, it's a train wreck that leads to endless amounts of funny stories for everyone. Emma is a girl who basically invented meddling. You'll want to read this immediately if you never gave it or Jane Austen a shot.

3. The Great Gatsby

How can anybody justify going through life without reading Gatsby. One of the great novels of the 20th century, this book begs to be read during the sweltering heat of the summer. Even if you have already read this, there's no maximum number of times to read about the green light at the end of the dock.

4. A Midsummer Night's Dream

The sweet dew-soaked words of Shakespeare's romantic comedy cannot be replaced. Puck, Hermia, Lysander, and the rest - I have adored this play since I was 11 and will recommend it until the day I die as my favorite of Shakespeare's works. Give it a read and have a laugh.

5. Tristan & Isolde

Truly a classic, this story predates Lancelot & Guinevere. The love of these two places you into a medieval love triangle that will make you swoon and cry, longing to have that kind of love in your life. Few love stories weather the passing of time like this one has - you'll definitely want to read this.

Have a great weekend and happy reading!
